Frequently Asked Questions
In the heart of the Black Perigord, the site of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac is remarkable in more ways than one: the beauty of the landscapes of the Beune valley, at the confluence of the Vézère and Beune rivers, the excellence of its local products and, above all, the richness of its historical heritage.
The caves of Les Eyzies have been occupied since the Paleolithic era, to the point that the town claims to be the capital of prehistory.
But today, we suggest you discover the medieval period of Les Eyzies and stay in a hotel near the Château de Commarque.
The first wooden tower was built on the site in the 12th century at the instigation of Garin de Commarque, abbot of Sarlat.
A castrum was soon built on the rocky spur and a village spread out at its feet.
Initially managed as a coseigniory, the castle passed definitively into the hands of the Barons of Beynac after the Hundred Years War.
It was abandoned towards the end of the 16th century and fell into oblivion until 1962 when Hubert de Commarque decided to save the castle of his distant ancestors.
At present, part of the castle is open to the public and is the scene of numerous events while restoration work on the main building continues.
