Frequently Asked Questions
When you arrive in Blois, in the Loir-et-Cher region, you will be surprised by the discovery of the royal castle built in the heart of the city.
We advise you to choose a hotel close to the Castle of Blois and to visit in detail the residence where many members of the royal family were born, lived and died.
The future king Louis XII was born in Blois in 1462 and when he came to the throne he decided to move to the castle from the former royal residence of Amboise.
The castle was then completely refurbished in a late Gothic style.
Although François I broke with tradition by choosing Fontainebleau, the castle of Blois remained the home of the royal children and was a place of celebrations and festivities before serving as a place of retreat for Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV.
Completely abandoned in 1660, it was looted during the Revolution and its demolition was planned.
Fortunately, the castle of Blois was saved thanks to Prosper Mérimée and was finally restored.
It is now open to the public and also houses the city's Fine Arts Museum.
After your visit, don't miss the chance to enter the world of illusion by visiting the Robert-Houdin magic house, where the automatons, optical illusion games and magician's equipment are on display.
