Frequently Asked Questions
During your next visit to Paris, we suggest you choose a hotel near the Hôtel des Invalides and discover this monument built under Louis XIV to house invalid or over-aged soldiers of the French army.
His aim was to provide them with a decent life, but above all to cleanse the city of these former soldiers, who were often involved in fights.
The building, characterised by its golden dome, served as a hospital, hospice and convent and was maintained by priories and abbeys.
It could accommodate 4,000 soldiers at the time of Louis XIV.
The most able-bodied of them worked in various workshops producing uniforms, tapestries and illuminations.
Although Louis XIV's successors did not pay much attention to this vast edifice, the same could not be said of Napoleon who, as a fine strategist, sought to get closer to the soldiers.
Numerous official ceremonies, including the first presentation of the Legion of Honour, were organised at the Invalides, which remained a place dear to the hearts of the Bonapartists long after the emperor's death.
Although the Hôtel des Invalides is now home to several museums, including the Musée de l'Armée, it is still home to around a hundred major war invalids.
