Frequently Asked Questions
Arles was founded some 2,500 years ago on the Rhone delta.
Its name means "near the pond" in Celtic and refers to the marshes in the area.
A large part of the Camargue belongs to this vast commune, which is sparsely populated because of the permanent risk of flooding.
The hinterland of Arles is divided between salt marshes, rice fields, farmland and a few villages.
This makes the Camargue an exceptional nature reserve.
The city itself is crossed by the Rhône, which is constantly monitored because of the risk of flooding in the event of high water.
However, this characteristic did not prevent the settlement of the Gauls and later the Romans, who appreciated its location on the trade routes.
For this reason, Arles enjoys a great opulence which is reflected in the numerous historical monuments of the city.
But Arles is also a city of traditional festivals with, in particular, the festival of the Gardians, the féria and its Camargue races, the Rencontres d'Arles devoted to photography, the Jazz festival or the Horse festival.
If you want to visit Arles, don't hesitate to book your hotel in the Camargue and experience unforgettable moments far from the stress of big cities.
