Frequently Asked Questions
Often referred to as the capital of the Alps, the city of Grenoble has always benefited from its environment and the historical events that have marked the region.
The history of Grenoble begins in Gallo-Roman times when a small village called Cularo was founded along the Roman road linking Vienne and Italy.
This strategic position allowed the village to grow rapidly and, in the 11th century, Grenoble was chosen as the capital of the Dauphiné.
Despite some dark times, the town developed, particularly thanks to the glove industry.
The discovery of hydraulic energy, white coal, further encouraged its economic expansion during the industrial era.
This opulence explains the rich architectural and cultural heritage of the city, such as the numerous private mansions lining the streets of the Old Town, the Palace of the Dauphiné Parliament or the Perret Tower, the oldest reinforced concrete tower in Europe.
The Grenoble region also attracts green tourism enthusiasts who choose a hotel at the gateway to the Vercors, a mountain massif in the Pre-Alps.
This massif served as headquarters for the maquisards during the Second World War.
Since then, the Vercors has once again become a paradise for hikers, cross-country skiers, climbers, speleologists and canyoning enthusiasts.
