Frequently Asked Questions
The Picardy town of Chantilly is known for its forest, its racecourse, its black lace, its porcelain and its castle.
It deserves more than a simple diversions and we invite travellers to put down their bags in a hotel near the Château de Chantilly and set off to discover the town.
A first fortress was built in Chantilly during the Middle Ages to protect the road leading from Senlis to Paris.
A few small hamlets were built around the fortress.
However, it was not until the 15th century that it was developed by the Montmorency family and over the centuries became a real castle surrounded by gardens.
In the 17th century, the estate became the property of the House of Condé and was home to major players in cultural life such as Jean de La Fontaine, Madame de Sévigné, Jean de La Bruyère and Bossuet.
Unfortunately, the castle was looted and partially destroyed during the French Revolution.
It was rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century and now houses the Musée Condé and its sumptuous collection of paintings, manuscripts and drawings, including several paintings by Fra Angelico, Raphael, Watteau and Ingres.
The Grandes Écuries are home to the living horse museum where you can watch horse shows and dressage demonstrations.
Don't forget to discover the beautiful black Chantilly lace and to find in the museum's rooms some pieces of porcelain marked with a hunting horn and made in the past in the factory founded by the Princes of Condé in the 18th century.
