Frequently Asked Questions
If you leave Clermont-Ferrand in the direction of Béziers, you will automatically take the A75 motorway, better known as La Méridienne, and today we suggest that you stop off at a hotel near the Millau Viaduct and discover this gigantic cable-stayed bridge which crosses the Tarn valley, the point of union between the Red Causses and the Larzac.
Before the viaduct was built, motorists had to drive down into the valley and through the town of Millau to cross the river, which caused major traffic jams during the summer holidays.
The idea of building a bridge across the whole valley was therefore born and the first feasibility studies were carried out in 1987.
However, it was not until 2004 that the project was completed and the first cars drove over the Millau Viaduct, crossing the 2,460 metres of the structure and flying over the valley at a height of 270 metres.
The gigantic bridge rests on seven pillars, each topped by a pylon that allows 11 pairs of guy wires to be attached.
An information area and an exhibition have been created to explain the different phases of construction and the characteristics of the viaduct, while a guided tour allows tourists to enter the base of a pillar and discover an incredible view from a lookout point.
