throughout Europe at the time. A woman, named “Hurette”, lived in a hut built on a hill, about a kilometre from the village. When the inhabitants of Paliseul, suffering from the disease, did not succumb on the spot, they were transported to the hut to avoid spreading the illness. Lady Hurette cared for the plague victims. There, the mistress of the dwelling took care of them in a makeshift hospital. Many were victims of the plague. They were buried on the site. When the Paliseul-Bouillon road was being built, at the very place where the trenches were dug in the mound (opposite where the Lycée Paul Verlaine is now), human bones were found. Today, there is a lovely restaurant there called: “La hutte Lurette”.”
