Frequently Asked Questions
In the heart of Picardy, in the department of Oise, the town of Compiègne has been the scene of an important page in French history.
Indeed, Compiègne has welcomed kings and emperors on its territory since the Merovingian period.
The coronation of Louis II, the stopover of Marie-Antoinette before her marriage to Louis XVI, the residence of Napoleon I and Napoleon III, the marriage of Louise-Marie d'Orléans and the King of the Belgians, Leopold I, and the signing of important treaties, the town has been at the centre of many events.
The current building was built in the 18th century on the site of the first Merovingian palace, itself replaced successively by the palaces of Charles the Bald and Charles V in the 14th century.
You can see some remains of the latter castle in the structure of the present palace, which was enlarged and modernised by Louis XV, who enjoyed coming to hunt in the forest of Compiègne, and who was frequently visited by Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, Charles X and Napoleon III.
More recently, in 2006, the Château de Compiègne hosted the summit between France, Germany and Russia.
visitors can admire the historic flats of the imperial couple as well as the beautiful collections of the Second Empire and Car and Tourism museums before discovering the park, its sculptures and its Rose Garden.
